— it was amongst the stars that a set of twins would change the future covens across the lands. the maximus boys were born.

at the witching hour of their twenty second birthday, the boys were to perform the merge ritual where one twin unfortunately must absorb the other ( the 'weaker' twin.) the merge would allow one witch to be stronger and lead as regent of the village. the winner absorbed the soul of the twin, which results in the death of the other.

max (wyatt ) the favoured twin was most likely to win the exchange. elijah furious and refusing to die with such a revelation, sought the advice from the oracle. an elixir of immortality would allow the twins to defeat the laws of nature. the devious one would sell his soul if it meant he could outsmart his brother.
the price was, a life for a life; the blood of thy kin.

without missing a beat, the eve of their birthday elijah murdered their sister polaris to complete the spell. max being the trusting brother, thought nothing of the elixir given to him. only told this would keep their chances of remaining together as he truly loved his brother.

the ancestors favoured max in the exchange as prophesied but the absorption did not kill his twin. elijah's soul was infused inside the other. the curse of the forbidden ambrosia was taken and the god of death was furious for being cheated.

shortly after elijah's death, max sat by the waters grieving. the truth of the ceremony came to light. his body was no longer his own, but a vessel for his brother. any mirror, any reflection was a form of seeing his other half, elijah. their telepathic communication could also be done by speaking in silence to one another.

elijah learned to take over max’s form, to let his true nature come out. killing villagers and destroying max’s reputation as regent. it took a show of force for the coven to put max away in the vault, sealed by magic for him to rot and desiccate.

the single drop of blood from an archeologist, in 1900's woke up the twins. the price to pay for breaking the laws of nature was to feed on blood, a vampire they were not. and they refused to be called such. leaving the vault allowed for caliban -- a slayer sworn by blood oath to secure the twins back if they should leave.

max had to find a way to control his twin — and he did it by creating a ring that protected his body from complete possession. one that could never be taken off.

they are usually on the run from caliban, finding different ways to evade him.
